Large Group Facilitation

Many groups and organizations shy away from large group facilitation. They believe that “crowds” are hard to control, and “dangerous”. We insist on the opposite. Deep Democracy Large Group Process shows the hidden structure or “order" that appears in all groups, and aims at creating community, healing schisms and fragmentation, and bringing common ground. We apply large group process methods in "for profit" companies of diverse industries - from IT to manufacturing and healthcare groups - who come out stronger, more united and more vibrant. Worldwork facilitation actually works with large groups, unlike many other methods that claim to do so, but in fact simply break large groups down into smaller, like-minded groups. Deep Democracy Large Group Facilitation is the answer to the question: How can we live together in the various manifestations of our multicultural and diverse worlds in a way that we don't simply co-exist, we co-blossom?! How can we enhance our diverse creativity, and bring more “ownership” into our teams, organizations, and the public space? We seek a new collective culture in which individuals no longer look to leaders, only, for inspiration and solutions; they also try to embody leadership themselves, in an effort to support and inspire us all to design a common future.

This 3-day seminar has the following goals:

·      To study and practice process oriented facilitation methods for discovering and utilizing hidden potentials
in groups and teams, which can lead the group or team into new horizons.

·      To learn and practice conflict prevention and resolution methods for use in large group facilitation.

·      To study and practice innerwork methods that can be applied before, during, and after the facilitation event.

·      To practice these skills and attitudes within our own ad-hoc groups.

Deep Democracy and Large Group Facilitation

Unlike "classical" democracy, which focuses on majority rule, Deep Democracy suggests that all voices, states of awareness, and frameworks of reality are important. Deep Democracy also suggests that all the information carried within these voices, levels of awareness, and frameworks is needed to understand the complete process of a system. Deep Democracy is an attitude that focuses on the awareness of voices that are both central and marginal.

This type of awareness can be focused on groups, organizations, one's own inner experiences, people in conflict, etc. Allowing oneself to take seriously seemingly unimportant events and feelings can often bring unexpected solutions to both group and inner conflicts. This seminar will focus primarily on the practice of deep democracy in large group facilitation, also known as worldwork facilitation.

Worldwork—tested in the waters of past war zones such as Ireland, Yugoslavia, the Middle East, and in areas of high tension diversity processes like US mega-cities during racial riots, Berlin during high tensions between diverse communities, and in cities with irreconcilable stakeholder processes—guarantees outcomes that bring stakeholders closer together and inspires new and unexpected solutions that were innate but undiscovered by the everyday mindset, concealed in tensions and conflicts.

Overview of the Days

Learning the art and practice of facilitation is a multidimensional experience that occurs on at least 3 levels, which intermingle and are co-dependent. These are: 1) theoretical understanding 2) practical, experiential understanding 3) innerwork. Each day will include opportunities for theoretical study of tools and skills, "hands-on" practice, innerwork methods to "get to know your instrument", and time for reflection and debriefing. Please come with your shovel and get ready to dive into the sandbox of discovery!
